چکیده
Abstract. Upper-tropospheric outflow is analysed in cloud-resolving large-eddy simulations. Thereby, the role of convective organization, latent heating, and other factors upper-tropospheric divergent-outflow variability from deep convection diagnosed using a set more than 80 simulations because outflows are thought to be an important feedback (organized) large-scale atmospheric flows; perturbations those may sometimes propagate into larger-scale perturbations. divergence found controlled by net heating organization. At low precipitation rates isolated cells have stronger mass squall lines. The line weakest (relative heating) when purely 2D case infinite-length line. high discrepancy between various modes reduces. Hence, overall, magnitude divergent explained dimensionality outflow, which together create non-linear relation.

Large Eddy Simulations using oodlesDST
The oodlesDST code is based on OpenFOAM software and performs Large Eddy Simulations of turbulent fluid flows. The code contains a number of specialized subgrid scale turbulence models and wall models. This report describes these models in sufficient detail to allow a new user of the code to make informed decisions regarding the use of these models for particular applications. An overview of th...
متن کاملLarge-eddy Simulations of the Effects of Hilly Terrain on the Convective Boundary Layer
Large-eddy simulations of the convective boundary layer are compared over hilly versus flat surfaces. Moderate values for the height and horizontal spacing of the hills were selected. Thermallydirect hill-valley circulations are induced by the uneven terrain, accounting for a significant fraction of the resolved energy in the boundary-layer eddies. The probability of upward eddy motion reaches ...
متن کامل5.6 Numerical Models of Entrainment into Sheared Convective Boundary Layers Evaluated through Large Eddy Simulations
Atmospheric convective boundary layer (CBL) entrainment is the downward mixing of free atmospheric air into the CBL as the CBL grows. Primarily, the CBL entrainment is driven by the buoyancy production of turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) due to heating of the lower surface or cooling at the CBL top. The effects of shear-generated turbulence in the CBL are secondary. However, cases of a purely bu...
متن کاملDynamics of Sheared Convective Boundary Layer Entrainment. Part I: Methodological Background and Large-Eddy Simulations
The reported study examines the dynamics of entrainment and its effects on the evolution of the dry atmospheric convective boundary layer (CBL) when wind shear is present. The sheared CBL can be studied by means of direct measurements in the atmosphere, laboratory studies, and numerical techniques. The advantages and disadvantages of each technique are discussed in the present paper, which also...
متن کاملBulk Models of the Sheared Convective Boundary Layer: Evaluation through Large Eddy Simulations
A set of first-order model (FOM) equations, describing the sheared convective boundary layer (CBL) evolution, is derived. The model output is compared with predictions of the zero-order bulk model (ZOM) for the same CBL type. Large eddy simulation (LES) data are employed to test both models. The results show an advantage of the FOM over the ZOM in the prediction of entrainment, but in many CBL ...
